In the mid-1960s to theorist by the name of Blake and Mouton develop a theory they labeled the Managerial Grid. These two theorist argued that there were two primary behavioral dimensions of leaders, one was a concern for production and the other was a concern for people (Johnson, 2005). Based upon these two concerns this model argues that leadership styles are not fixed and not only based upon one’s personality, and the model assumes that a leaders behavior are changing and flexible. For this assignment you will research the managerial grid model. Blake and Mouton suggested that the two primary behavioral dimensions that leaders should be concerned with are a concern for production and a concern for people. Blake and Mouton suggested that all organizations have three interrelated universals: a purpose, people, and a hierarchy (Johnson, 2005). The way these two concerns are linked defines how people manage and lead situations in the workplace. The Grid(1, 1): In this position, a leader has little concern for production and people and does as little as possible to get by. This leader also avoids conflict and does not take responsibility for mistakes, leaving employees to handle problems on their own.(1, 9): This manager has a great concern for people and little concern for production, and employees are encouraged rather than being driven to produce. This type of leader avoids conflict and concentrates on being liked.(5, 5): This leader is not committed or concerned for either production or people and tries to balance production and concern for people by emphasizing relevant aspects of work. There is a basic assumption that people will work willingly when given reasons for doing the work. That is, the leader relies on traditional approaches to solve problems, is not creative, and seeks to maintain the status quo rather than change things.(9, 1): This manager has a high concern for production and a low concern for people. This type of manager is more concerned about profits and not people and sees his or her responsibility as planning, controlling, and directing the work of subordinates to meet production needs of the organization.(9, 9): This manager has a high concern for both people and production. The assumption is that meeting the needs of people and production do not conflict, and the primary goal of this type of management is to integrate creativity with high productivity through team action. The studentInstructor’s Comments:The leadership topic is a difficult one because there are no set definitions to explain it.  It often gets lost in the word management as well.  Are you a good leader, or a good manager?  Are they the same thing?  Be aware there is no specific answer that explains everything but be sure to define the topic as the question asks.  Give your personal feelings as well.
